Canada
Canada has one of the oldest relationships with baseball in the world. The first baseball game recorded in the country was played in Beachville, Ontario on June 14, 1838. Jimmy Wood became the first Canadian to ever play in the Majors in 1871 as a member of the National Association's Chicago White Stockings. In 1914, Babe Ruth hit his first professional home run at Hanlan's Point Stadium on Toronto Island.

Baseball Canada teams have been competing internationally since 1967 when the Pan Am Games were held in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Canada competed in the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, South Korea when baseball was a demonstration sport and later qualified for the 2004 Olympics in Athens where they lost a heartbreaker to Cuba in the semi-finals before bowing out to Japan in the bronze medal game. The Senior National Team claimed the bronze medal in the 2009 and 2011 IBAF World Championships. Canada won the gold medal at the 2011 Pan-American Games in Mexico, defeating the United States 2-1. Canada won its second gold medal when they defeated the United States 7-6 in extra innings at the 2015 Pan-American Games in Toronto. Canada had one of the toughest draws in their fourth World Baseball Classic, suffering three straight losses to the Dominican Republic, Colombia and the United States to exit in the first round.

HEADLINES

Freeman wholeheartedly endorses Classic experience

Freddie Freeman would gladly welcome the opportunity to participate in another World Baseball Classic. Along with having the opportunity to honor his late mother's Canadian heritage, the Braves' first baseman appreciated the chance to escape Spring Training's monotony and compete within an environment more similar to what he may experience during the regular season.

US starts fast vs. Canada to book Round 2 ticket

Throw out all the tiebreaker scenarios. Team USA is moving on. A focused Team USA squad defeated Team Canada, 8-0, on Sunday at Marlins Park in Miami to punch its ticket to the second round in San Diego. The victory left the Americans with a 2-1 record in Pool C, good enough to claim a Pool F matchup against the Pool D runner-up.

Team USA controls Classic destiny

Thanks to the Dominican Republic's nail-biting, 11-inning victory over Colombia on Sunday afternoon, the United States once again controls its own destiny in the World Baseball Classic.

Dempster to start for Canada vs. USA

The World Baseball Classic, it seems, will reach a new level of crazy tonight. Ryan Dempster, who was pitching on 1,232 days' rest when he started against the Dominican Republic on Thursday, will be Canada's starting pitcher against Team USA on Sunday, the team announced.
