Cuba
Cuba
Baseball was brought into the island by Cuban students coming back from the United States and was popularized by U.S. sailors in ports such as that of Matanzas. The passion grew and the magnitude of the spiritual support baseball received by the Cuban people was confirmed by each and every one of the awards reached. Stadiums were built, although fans continued to play in improvised fields.

At the international arena, the Cubans have won 25 World Cups in 32 appearances and three Olympic Games - Barcelona '92, Atlanta '96 and Athens '04, in addition to a silver medal in Sydney 2000 and Beijing 2008. In December 2014, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred entered into discussions to hold an exhibition game between a MLB Club and the Cuban National team in 2016. The Tampa Bay Rays played the Cuban National Baseball team on March 22, 2016 in Havana's Estadio Latinoamericano. The Rays won 4-1. The Game was attended by U.S. President Barack Obama, Cuban President Raul Castro and Rachel Robinson, widow of Jackie Robinson. The Cubans, currently 5th in the world ranking according to the International Baseball Federation (IBAF), were the runner-ups of the 2016 World Baseball Classic, ranked sixth in the 2009 World Baseball Classic and placed fifth in the 2013 tournament.

In the 2017 edition of the World Baseball Classic, the Cubans used victories over China and Australia to advance to the second round. But Pool E would prove their undoing with losses to Israel, Japan and the Netherlands.
