Spain's most-prized talent, Alejandro Sanchez, signed a seven-year deal with the Atlanta Braves prior to the 2010 season. Sanchez, an infield prospect from Valencia, Spain, inked the contract at the age of 17. As for the Spain National Team, the highlight of the past half-decade came at the 2007 European Baseball Championships, where Spain played to a third-place finish. Spain found success during the 2013 World Baseball Classic qualifiers, earning its way to the main tournament for the first time in team history with a 9-7 win over Israel.

Behind early outburst, France ousts Spain

Buoyed by a big first-inning rally, France defeated Spain, 5-3, on Friday afternoon at Rod Carew Stadium to revive its hopes in the Panama City pool of the World Baseball Classic qualifier. With the loss, Spain was eliminated in its bid to reach its second consecutive Classic tournament. France will try to keep its tournament hopes going on Saturday at 9 p.m. ET, when it faces the loser of Friday night's Colombia-Panama matchup. The winner of that Saturday contest will face the Colombia-Panama winner on Sunday at 7 looking to win the pool and earn a trip to the Classic. Fans can watch all Classic qualifier action on MLB.com or worldbaseballclassic.com and follow along with Gameday.

Prospects to watch in WBC qualifiers

Several of Major League Baseball's best young prospects will hit pause on Spring Training this weekend due to their involvement in qualifying games for the World Baseball Classic. The full tournament will begin next spring, but this weekend's qualifying rounds will be broadcast live on MLB.com.

Patience, pitching carry Colombia past Spain

It was easy to spot Colombian second baseman Dilson Herrera before Thursday afternoon's World Baseball Classic qualifier against Spain. As he ran around the field for a pregame workout, Herrera sported a Colombian flag underneath his cap that waved in the wind as he scampered around. A few hours later, he carried the red, blue and yellow flag of his country proudly into the news conference after he helped his team earn a 9-2 victory.
