The Philippines participated in its first World Baseball Classic during the 2013 qualifier. The upstart nation got its first Classic victory with an 8-2 thrashing of Thailand before losses to Chinese Taipei and New Zealand dashed their hopes of reaching the main event. The Philippines entered the 2017 qualifiers boasting five players who are current members of an MLB organization.

Former Red Sox prospect Boss Moanaroa went 4-for-5 with a homer, two doubles and seven RBIs to give New Zealand (1-1) a 17-7 mercy-rule win in eight innings over the Philippines (0-2) in a World Baseball Classic Qualifier elimination game on Friday at Blacktown International Sportspark.
